Summer 2019 Vol. 39 - No. 193 Economic Development: a Double-Edged Sword for the Church in China
Good-bye, our beloved Sr. Janet Carroll
Staff of Holy Spirit Study Centre
An old friend of the Holy Spirit Study Centre and of the Church in China, Maryknoll Sister Janet Carroll died on 28 May, 2019 in Ossining, New York, United States, at the age of 85. She had been a Maryknoll Sister for 67 years.
Sr. Janet Carroll
Sr. Janet was born in New York City on 22 July, 1933 to Ethel Rita (Waters) Carroll and Raphael Peter Carroll. She entered the Maryknoll Sisters Novitiate in Maryknoll, NY on 2 September, 1952.
She received her first overseas mission assignment to Changhua, Taiwan, where she studied Chinese language, culture and history, and worked on socio-economic leadership training programmes. She made her Final Profession of Vows on 7 March, 1961 in Taiwan.
Sr. Janet loved China very much. Through academic, ecumenical mission study in the 1970s, she promoted interest in, and learning about the Church in China. From 1989 till 2003, she was Executive Director of the U.S. Catholic China Bureau, and edited the China Church Quarterly. As an active China Church supporter, she kept close contact with our Centre over the last thirty years.
Besides the many recognitions she received, including the Papal Honor: Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice for her service to the Holy See Mission to the United Nations, and the American Missiology Society's Lifetime Achievement Award, Sr. Janet will also be remembered by friends in Taiwan, and many Chinese Sisters and priests associated with Maryknoll's formators programme.
