The fundamental mission of the Catholic Church is to communicate, to communicate the Good News to the world. More than 1,900 years ago, the Gospel according to St. Mark recorded the last words of Jesus on earth: “Go throughout the whole world and preach the gospel to all mankind” (Mk 16:15). These words have always been the core of all the activities of the Catholic Church, thus we can say that the Catholic Church itself is a huge communications community. In this sense, the history of the Catholic Church is the history of communication activities of the Catholic Church, and the history of the Catholic Church in China is the history of communication activities of the Catholic Church in China.
In view of this, Dr. Anthony S.K. Lam wrote this book《近代天主教在華傳播史論集》. He studied the communications work of the Catholic Church in China in these four hundred years.
How did the Catholic missionaries, who were foreigners and new to China, in a country with a totally different language, convey to the Chinese people the Catholic faith that they had never heard about? How did the missionaries express it in a way that the Chinese could understand? There involved lots of complicated problems. Dr. Lam found it worthwhile and interesting to investigate into some of the problems, and this book would also be helpful as a reference to our present evangelical work.
