In Memory of our real friend Fr. Roman Malek

Fr. Roman Malek, was born in Bytow (Kashubia, Poland) on 3 October 1951. He entered the Society of the Divine Word (S.V.D.) in 1969. He moved to the S.V.D. Mission house at Sankt Augustin in 1976 to pursue a degree in Sinology, Japanology, Comparative religious studies and Church history at the University of Bonn. He received a doctoral degree in Sinology in 1984. In 1998, Fr. Malek was appointed Professor of the History of Religions at the Philosophical-Theological Faculty S.V.D., St. Augustin. He was Editor of the world known Monumenta Serica for a couple of decades and he edited the interdisciplinary book series, The Chinese Face of Jesus Christ. In April 2011 he suffered a severe stroke, which abruptly put the brake on many of his creative activities. He was awarded the prize "Heart without borders" from the Polish Cardinal-Adam-Koz?owiecki Foundation in June 2016. In April 2018 he moved to the S.V.D. mission house in G?rna Grupa in his native Poland where he passed away after a short illness on 29 November 2019.
